SULLIVAN – Local sports fans have a new and exciting resource for just about anything and everything that involves running, hitting, shooting, throwing, kicking, spiking, and…well, you get it. A new website – www.sullivanathletics.com - is now online for the Sullivan School District sports scene.
I recently took the site for a digital test drive. Known as usability testing, I looked for the usual bugs, broken links, misplaced pages, and general mayhem that is often found with websites – including our own. I’m happy to report that sullivanathletics.com is a well-designed site that is easy to navigate and fun to use. And it’s jam-packed with updated information, photos, and links.
The scrolling scoreboard on the home page lists updated sports scores – a great feature! As a journalist, I love the calendar, which provides a quick view of sporting events. For parents, the website provides pdf files for physicals, a student handbook, and even a concussion return-to-play form. That’s forward thinking and very helpful to players and parents/guardians.
As a photographer, I love to share photos with the public. Sullivanathletics.com has a user-friendly photo uploader. If anyone buys a photo from the website, the sports boosters get part of the sale. Professional photographers can upload without subjecting their photos to purchase. In any case, it’s nice to share sporting memories with the public – please upload your photos to the myriad of galleries available.
The all-important home page is balanced and simple to navigate. A Twitter feed on the lower half of the page allows for quick viewing of scores and info. Game summaries and announcements are also positioned for a quick click, but not overpowering the site. Social media buttons allow for quick entry to those sites – another nice feature.
The site is powered by well-known school athletic website company Big Teams, a Virginia-based digital company. The site is robust, to say the least. It allows for excellent mobile viewing (apps included) and offers texting/e-mail alerts for fan-selected specific teams. Sign-up is from a home page “e-mail alert” link. The site has updated rosters, schedules, and even tells the viewer whether or not a game is on or cancelled – a great feature during inclement weather.
Go to sullivanathletics.com and experience something very cool for our high school sports. It’s a great community resource, easy to use, and safe and secure. I’m glad that the district switched to a non-advertising site (some sites have ads plastered all over the pages). The cost to the school is minimal – another plus. If you have ideas or suggestions, a contact form is on the site.
Check it out and let them know what you think.
