SULLIVAN - The intense rainfall has led to serious flooding along the Meramec River in Crawford and Franklin counties. The river surpassed the 15-foot flood stage Monday evening at Meramec State Park and Sappington Bridge, with an increase in flooding expected through Wednesday, reports the USGS and the National Weather Service. Today the river was at 18 feet at Meramec State Park and rising. The park campground is closed due to flooding. A flight today with helicopter pilot Tom Cline, Jr. today, revealed severe flooding from Sappington Bridge in Crawford County to Meramec Caverns in Franklin County. The caverns campground is flooded, as is the cave's parking lot and boat-ride gazebo. Farm fields along the river are going under, but so far structures seem to be dry. Stay tuned to the Sullivan Journal for flood updates. - WKS
