BOURBON - The City of Bourbon on Wednesday released to the Sullivan Journal News a dash-cam video that shows the March 5, 2014 high-speed pursuit and shooting of Gary Wenzel by a Bourbon municipal police officer. The Sullivan Journal requested the video last month, pursuant to the state Sunshine Law.
(That video is also online here at sullivanjournal.com.)
Wenzel was shot and killed by Bourbon P.D. officer Carl Storm after a 12-minute chase that allegedly began in Bourbon because of improper license plates and outstanding warrants. The chase began when officer Storm encountered Wenzel near the North Outer Road commuter parking lot. Storm pursued Wenzel north on Highway C, reaching speeds of at least 100 mph, and then continued the pursuit along paved and gravel roads until ultimately ending with Wenzel crashing at Hwy. J and Fann Road.
Wenzel, after crashing his vehicle into a ditch, approached officer Storm's vehicle. Within seconds, Storm fired three times, killing Wenzel. It was later learned that Wenzel was unarmed.
A coroner's inquest found that Storm acted in a justifiable manner. That story is here.
